Like George Costanza, I needed to put my wallet on a diet. Every time I got in the car or went to a movie I took out my wallet so I didn’t have to sit on it. I got to carrying it in my computer bag but I don’t always have that with me. I tried the man-purse (murse?) but it didn’t last. Then I saw a bit on wallet diets on Lifehacker and followed the links to all the different alternative wallets out there. This one caught my eye.
Even though the web site is a total infomercial (loud, bragging, tacky and everything), I figured for seventeen bucks it was worth trying. When I got it I was a bit dubious. Not that it would be thin, but that I would like it. First of all, I’m used to carrying my change in my wallet. I’d written that off when I ordered it. The problem was that it seemed cheap. They say it’s made out of parachute vinyl, and it probably is, but it feels like paper and it makes crinkling noises. I didn’t think I’d put up with it. But I’d paid my $17.50 and I figured I’d better give it a try.
I loaded it up like they instructed and, sure enough, it was less than a third the thickness of my old wallet with the same stuff. They recommend putting it in your pocket wide horizontally to make it deeper in your pocket and make it harder for all those pesky American pick pockets we’re always running into. I didn’t think it would fit that way unless you wore size 50 jeans, but it did. It also felt a little safer since I could no longer really feel it back there.
In the end (no pun intended), I don’t hear it crinkling at all and it’s very comfortable. So far I’ve just thrown any change I’ve gotten into tip jars but I don’t know what I’m going to do if I have to park at a meter. I’ll have to keep a little change in the car I guess.
All in all, I have to recommend it. Well, I don’t have to, but I want to. (I’m sure it’s a get-everyone-I-know-to-do-it-to self-affirmation thing.) If you’re interested in putting your wallet on a diet too (much easier than putting yourself on one) you can find it here. (Let me know if you try it so I can get the most of that self-affirmation thing.)
